Caulk is not flashing. Water management around an opening is layered — flashing at the head, a pan at the sill, and housewrap lapped so water runs out rather than in — and a bead of sealant over the top of a bad detail simply hides it for a season.
Where trim has rotted more than once in the same place, replacing it with the same material achieves the same result. PVC or composite trim at ground level, at sills and behind gutters is where it earns its cost.

Why did my new window leak?
Almost always the flashing, not the window. A window is installed into a wall that is already weatherproof, and the sill pan, side flashing and head flashing carry water around it. Skip them, or lap them the wrong way, and water runs behind the window into the wall. A window that leaks in its first years was installed without them.
What is included in trim and flashing work?
The sill pan, self-adhered flashing on the sides and head, integration with the house wrap in the right order, sealant where it belongs, and exterior trim or wrap that sheds water rather than trapping it. It is the part of a window job that is invisible when finished and is the whole reason the window stays dry.
